I followed your instructions to a tee, and even when I was getting the error during installation I stopped the installation, deleted the vm instance I was in the process of creating completely and repeated the instructions multiple times and still received
the same error so at that point I just continued with the install without pkgin installed because I needed to start the work required for the class. Should I try installing NetBSD on a different computer and see if it is just the computer I am using? </div>

Ok, so that works.<br>

You should be able to fetch the package then via<br>
<br>
ftp ${PKG_PATH}/pkgin-0.12.0.tgz<br>
<br>
and the you can manually install it via<br>
<br>
pkg_add ./pkgin-0.12.0.tgz<br>

I don't understand why this error occurs on your<br>
system. If you followed the installation instructions<br>
I provided, this shouldn't happen and the package<br>
installation should have worked.<br>
<br>
You can of course download the binary package from<br>
anywhere and copy it to your VM and try to install it<br>
from there, but if the simple package addition doesn't<br>
work, then chances are there's some other problem<br>
that'll eventually come back to cause more issues.<br>
