Today is Philippine Independence Day, a national holiday in the Philippines commemorating the country’s declaration of independence from Spain on June 12th, 1898. Independence Day is widely celebrated among mainland and overseas Filipinos alike, especially through worldwide Independence Day Parades in cities with prominent Filipino populations such as New York, New Jersey, Toronto, San Francisco, and Seattle. Due to the magnitude of the Filipino diaspora, these parades are a great opportunity for Filipinos to stay connected to their culture while being overseas.

Jose Rizal, widely regarded as the national hero of the Philippines

Quick Facts about Philippine Independence:
* The successful declaration of independence from Spain is mainly attributed to revolutionary leaders such as Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, and Emilio Aguinaldo, in addition to Spanish defeat in the Spanish-American War
* Despite Filipino victory and the establishment of the First Filipino Republic in 1898, the new country still failed to receive international recognition
* The 1898 Treaty of Paris ended the Spanish-American War (https://facebook.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=868d1e019e6e2df402670b0e2&id=4a0f5ec8bd&e=91a876ab0b) , with Spain formally ceding the territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the United States
* The Philippines ultimately received independence and official recognition as a country from the U.S. on July 4th, 1946 (https://facebook.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=868d1e019e6e2df402670b0e2&id=cdf6b4086b&e=91a876ab0b) as proclaimed by President Harry S. Truman
