Yes I added a SMTP rule (with Steven's mail IP address i.e. 155.246.14.12)
to the security group I am using,

do you think we need to add more rules to make it work?

do you allow inbound traffic on those ports to your instance? Just something
to check...

Dear Professor,

Earlier I was just testing the 'mail' command if its working on my instance
or not, so I tried it without using telnet.

As per the assignment I tried telnet later, first I tried port number 25
which is the default port for SMTP protocol, I got a connection time out
error

telnet nexus.stevens.edu 25
Trying 155.246.14.12...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out

Then, I changed the port to 587 since Steven's mail server works on port 587
as stated in ITWIKI page. But that also didn't work. Below I am mentioning
all what I tried.

telnet nexus.stevens.edu 587
Trying 155.246.14.12...
Connected to nexus.stevens.edu.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 nexus.stevens.edu ESMTP Postfix
mail from: jakhtar at stevens.edu
250 2.1.0 Ok
rcpt to: jakhtar at stevens.edu
554 5.7.1 <ec2- <http://ec2-50-17-124-180.compute-1.amazonaws.com>
50-17-124-180.compute-1.amazonaws.com[50.17.124.180 <tel:%5B50.17.124.180>
]>: Client
host rejected: Access denied

I'd really appreciate your valuable suggestion & help in this regard.

You should not use the 'mail' program. You should use telnet to port 25 and
issue the SMTP commands yourself.

Sounds like Amazon throttles outbound mail per instance to prevent spamming.
Try to shut down the instance and create a new one.
