Hello,
I've just sent out grades for HW3. If you haven't received an email
from me with a grade, please let me know asap.
Most of you did well. The part where I'd have liked most of you to
provide more analysis was with regards to the visual traceroute. As
usual, the point of the exercise is not for you to provide me with the
output of certain commands, but for you to show me you put some thought
into what that output means. When observing the packets hop around the
globe, you should take a step back and consider whether the hops make
sense, whether they're efficient, what information you might be missing
or not seeing etc.
The correlation of the AS numbers should have let you identify a few
common carriers and even some major POPs, but even though: sometimes
connections are made by jumping around inefficiently, crossing oceans
when that should not be necessary, or connecting from the middle of a
city to another city across the ocean without appearing to hop to a
place near where a submarine cable might land.
Review some of these traces and consider the physical aspects of the
internet.
Other than that, I will repeat again what I've said before (since some
of you are still only providing the briefest of READMEs): the more
information you provide me with, the more you show your work, your
thought process etc., the easier it is for me to give you more points.
Secondly: if you run into anything that gives you problems or anything
that doesn't seem to make sense, *please ask on the mailing list*. I
can't help you find the answer if I don't know what you're looking for.
Finally: it's officially past the midterm point of the semester. You
can give me some (anonymous) feedback:
