For this assignment, you are free to do it from your
own system.  However, I recommend you do it from
linux-lab, as there I know that the tools are set up
correctly and work.  If you run into problems getting
yourself set up for command-line usage on your own
system, I can't help you with that.

Also to note: even if you do the work on your own
system, you are still to do all the work on the
command-line exclusively.
