From jschauma at stevens.edu Sun Aug 31 15:49:29 2025 From: jschauma at stevens.edu (Jan Schaumann) Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2025 15:49:29 -0400 Subject: [cs631apue] Welcome to CS631 APUE, Fall 2025! Message-ID: Hello, and welcome to CS631 Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment, Fall 2025! This email is intended to give you a quick overview of how this class will run this semester. Please read it carefully and in its entirety -- there are several action items for you. All class information, including the detailed syllabus, is available from the course website at: https://stevens.netmeister.org/631/ You want to bookmark this URL and visit it regularly. As you can tell, I've subscribed you to the class mailing list (cs631apue at lists.stevens.edu); this will be the primary means of asynchronous communication for us. It is a discussion list, not just for announcements, so you are strongly encouraged do ask questions or share interesting content here! You will also receive an invite to the course Slack channel (https://cs631apue2025.slack.com/). Please customize your profile there, add your preferred name and pronouns, and say hi to each other. We'll use this channel to chat informally in semi-real time. I'm looking forward to active discussions on there! You may have noticed that the course website contains links to video lectures available on YouTube: https://youtube.com/c/cs631apue Please make sure to watch the videos for the given week _prior_ to our in-class meeting. That will allow us to use the time in class for more productive discussions and follow-up questions. Each week, there will be a short checkpoint to be filled out online to help me gauge your understanding of the materials for the week and what we may need to cover in class. The link is found in the syllabus; it is your responsibility to remember to submit this checkpoint. For this week, that's: https://stevens.netmeister.org/cgi-bin/631-01.cgi Our first class will take place on 2025-09-08, starting at 18:30 Eastern in Edwin A. Stevens 329. As per the course website and introductory videos, we will be doing all our work on a NetBSD system. Please make sure that you are set up for this _prior to our first class_: https://stevens.netmeister.org/631/#systems It is best to not wait until the day before class to start your assignments, so that you have time to ask questions on Slack or this mailing list. Please do use this week before our first class to ensure you are all set up with your NetBSD VM. Feel free to discuss and exchange information and help one another in the class Slack. The more interactive our discussions, the better a learning experience you will have. I'm looking forward to meet you all in class and to a productive semester - see you all next week! -Jan
