*FOR THE 2013 QUEER STUDIES SIG SCHOLAR-ACTIVIST AWARDS*****



*The Queer Studies SIG Scholar-Activist Awards Program *aims to strengthen
and broaden the links between activism and research as they relate to
LGBTTIQ people in education, to the relationships between sexuality/gendCr
and education, and to education-based approaches to challenging
heterosexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression. We are inviting
applications from those who offer groundbreaking approaches to working with
these linkages and addressing these topics through activist research.

*The 2013 Awards are as follows: *****

·       Dissertation of the Year Award****

·       Article of the Year Award****

·       Body of Work Award****

·       Graduate Student Travel Grant *(not an official AERA award - funds
for travel to AERA to present in the Queer Studies SIG program)*

Submissions will be evaluated for academic rigor, scientific or scholarly
significance of the study or work, and how they support and advance
interdisciplinary discourse including queer theory, queer students and
educators, curriculum and sexuality, and issues of intersectionality.

Application and/or nomination materials should be sent to both chairs of
the Awards Committee****

Applications for the 2013 awards must be received no later than *January
15, 2013*. Recipients will be notified by email before February 15, 2013.

*Dissertation of the Year Award*****

The Queer Studies SIG annually rewards the best dissertation on LGBT /
queer studies in education that has been defended in the previous academic
year. In this way, we reward high quality research in LGBT / queer studies,
to support emerging scholars, and to publicize the work of graduate student
members.

**

*Selection / Eligibility Criteria (required materials) for the 2013 award:*

1.     The dissertation must have been defended in the 2011-2012 Academic
Year (Fall 2011 through Summer 2012)****

2.     Nominee must be a member of the Queer Studies SIG****

3.     Letter of support or recommendation is required****

4.     Précis of the dissertation (max. 5 pages) will be eligible****

*Review / Selection Process:
*Selection will be done through blind peer review. The Awards Chair will
distribute blind copies of the submitted documents to three reviewers. If
necessary, ties will be broken by a fourth reviewer.

*Form of Recognition:
*A plaque and a check will be awarded to the winner of the Dissertation of
the Year Award at the annual Queer Studies SIG business meeting, during the
AERA conference

*Article of the Year Award*****

LGBT / queer studies in education over the previous two (2) calendar years.
This is a way for the Queer Studies SIG to reward high quality research in
LGBT / queer studies and to publicize the work of its members.  **Note that
no scholar can win twice.*

1.     The manuscript must have been published in 2011 or 2012****

2.     Nominee must be a member of the Queer Studies SIG****

3.     Letter of support or recommendation or a letter of self-nomination
must be submitted****

*Selection will be done through blind peer review. The Awards Chair will
distribute blind copies of the submitted documents to three reviewers. If

**Significant Body of Work Award*****

The Queer Studies SIG annually recognizes a renowned scholar in LGBT /
queer studies for her or his contribution to the field, in terms of
scholarly research and activism work for the LGBT / queer community. This
is a way for the Queer Studies SIG to reward high-quality work and service
to the LGBT / queer community.* *

*Submissions for the Body of Work Award will carry over for two years. No
scholar can win twice.*

*Selection / Eligibility Criteria (required materials) for the 2012 award: *

1.     Nominated scholar must be a member of the Queer SIG.****

2.     While scholars may self-nominate, a letter of support or
recommendation is required that outlines/discusses the broad impact of the
scholar's work.****

3.     Writing sample, in the form of a book chapter, journal article, or
other relevant work must be included****

4.     CV or resume* *****

*Review / Selection Process:
*Selection will be done through peer review. The Awards Chair will
distribute copies of the submitted documents to three reviewers. If
necessary, ties will be broken by a fourth reviewer. Blind review is not
possible for the Significant Body of Work Award.

*Form of Recognition:
*A plaque and a check will be awarded to the winner of the Significant Body
of Work Award at the annual Queer Studies SIG business meeting, during the
AERA conference
