Staying In With TM

** Hi there!
------------------------------------------------------------

You may have noticed that our list of the fifty best barbecue joints (https://www.texasmonthly.com/interactive/top-50-bbq-2021/?utm_source=Texas+Monthly&utm_campaign=d290dcd248-Staying+In+10-21-21&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_92f99d7313-d290dcd248-55458179) is here 🥳. And as a member of the BBQ tasting team, I can honestly say it was a labor of love: you have to really adore smoked meats to drive so many miles to eat so many pounds of them during the hot spring and summer months. For this year's list, 35 of us visited 411 barbecue spots in total. I got an early start back in May, when my husband and I planned to visit two joints (DB’s Rustic Iron BBQ, in Terlingua, and Brick Vault Brewery and Barbecue, in Marathon) on the way back from a visit to Big Bend. I’m not sure why I thought it was a good idea to sleep in a tent in the Chihuahuan Desert at that time of year, especially while pregnant and on the heels of a recent wildfire (several hiking trails were still closed). For two days, we sat under the Texas sun at our campsite, biding our time with books and popsicles from the nearby lodge. When we finally left, I
was tempted to head straight home. But we stayed the course and were mightily rewarded for it: the friendly DB’s pitmaster lifted our spirits, and that first bite of Brick Vault’s banana pudding cooled us right down.

To read about my colleagues' experiences on the road, you can find them all in Tales From the BBQ Trail (https://www.texasmonthly.com/bbq/tales-from-the-bbq-trail/?utm_source=Texas+Monthly&utm_campaign=d290dcd248-Staying+In+10-21-21&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_92f99d7313-d290dcd248-55458179) . If you're craving something different, here's where to find (https://www.texasmonthly.com/bbq/brisket-in-a-bento-box-on-a-taco-or-over-rice/?utm_source=Texas+Monthly&utm_campaign=d290dcd248-Staying+In+10-21-21&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_92f99d7313-d290dcd248-55458179) brisket in a bento box or on a taco or over rice. More of a barbecue-sides person? Check out these notable corn dishes (https://www.texasmonthly.com/bbq/seven-a-maize-ing-side-dishes/?utm_source=Texas+Monthly&utm_campaign=d290dcd248-Staying+In+10-21-21&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_92f99d7313-d290dcd248-55458179) from joints across the state. And I hope that wherever our new Top 50 list (https://www.texasmonthly.com/interactive/top-50-bbq-2021/?utm_source=Texas+Monthly&utm_campaign=d290dcd248-Staying+In+10-21-21&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_92f99d7313-d290dcd248-55458179) takes you, you enjoy the ride (and, ahem, cooler weather). But first, scroll down for more good stuff to dig into.
