Hello everyone! Welcome to the Stevens Game Development Club (SGDC). If you’re a returning member, coming from the flock party, or someone who just found our club intriguing, we’re happy to have you!
We talk about everything you could need in your game development arsenal, whether it's designing intriguing mechanics, or making something feel punchy, we have discussions on how to go about approaching anything you might come across when making a game. Our meetings are every Tuesday at 9pm in Babbio 122 and last an hour (there are exceptions but we’ll email you about that). Our first meeting is September 10th, and it’ll be a showcase of the work you did over the summer, be it games, programs, art, etc! Be sure to check it out, and don’t worry we’ll have more opportunities like that in the future.
On top of that, we run Game Jams! Game Jams are challenges where you must make a game from scratch to fit a theme. Regardless if it's thematically, mechanically, or even technically, as long as it fits the theme it's fair game. After the allotted time, everyone votes on each game, and the one with the most votes wins the jam, along with some solid prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place. We will be running two game jams, one 48-hour jam on October 18th-20th, and a week-long one on November 12th-19th! Be sure to attend, even if you don’t make a game, it's cool to see what other people made, and there's free food for both opening and closing ceremonies! We’ll have more details about each jam as we get closer to the date, so keep an eye on our emails!
If you want to participate in the jams but don’t know how to code, you can team up with other club members to submit a game. However, if you want to get your foot in the door with game programming, we host our Learn Jam, where you follow along as we give you a quick start into the world of game programming. The Learn Jam will be September 21st 12pm-5pm in Babbio 122. Be sure to attend to get your foot in the game programming door.
However, for the non-programmers out there, we’re starting a new kind of jam this semester, the Create Jam! These are less formal, week-long jams held on our discord (invite at the top of the email). These are fun jams where we give you a theme and all you have to do is create something that matches the theme. It can be anything! Whether its art, music, assets, or programs, anything goes as long as it fits the theme. After the week is over we compile them all into a showcase and vote on which ones you liked best! The main goals of the Create Jam is to inspire creativity and give people a chance to show off their skills, and create a resource where your peers can use assets that fellow club members made for the Jam (with credit of course). We’re still figuring out the specifics, so keep an eye out so you don’t miss it!
Lastly we have our community discord where you have an entire group of people ready to give you feedback and test your games. Feel free to showcase your own stuff there, and if you wanna show your stuff in-person, if we have extra time at the end of the meeting (we usually do) you’ll be able to show it off.
Thanks for joining us! Hope you enjoy your time at the Stevens Game Development Club. See you soon!
Best Wishes,
SGDC (Stevens Game Development Club)
