[Themaintainers] Happy 5th Birthday, Maintainers

Hi, everybody.

It's hard to believe, but it was five years ago today that Maintainers
co-director Andy Russell wrote an email, saying that we should answer
Walter Isaacson's book, _The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses,
and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution_, with a volume to be titled, _The
Maintainers: How Bureaucrats, Standards Engineers, and Introverts Create
Technologies that Kinds of Work Most of the Time_. It's been a wild ride
since that time.

In the last few years, our biggest developments were the grant from the
Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which has allowed us to build the
organizational infrastructure of the group, and our most recent conference,
Maintainers III: Practice, Policy, and Care, which many of you participated
in. Another crucial development was Jessica Meyerson - our visionary
community builder - becoming the third Maintainers co-director. We'll have
more happenings, conversations, and publications down the road, including
soon the report from Maintainers III, which will highlight and synthesize
some of the ideas we heard there.

Most of all, Andy, Jess, and I want to thank YOU, the members of The
Maintainers community, for being involved. It's hearing and learning from
you all that really makes it all worth it.

Jess, put together a little birthday card for Twitter, which I paste below.
It includes these words, "Join us in celebrating this happy milestone by
sharing how you got involved in The Maintainers."
