[Themaintainers] COVID-19 and Maintainers

An long dead friend used to ask, "Why is there never enough time to do it
right in the first place, but plenty of time to come back the second time
and fix it?"

And as my Grandmother used to say, "You go wash your hands right now!"

Thanks for the good wishes, and the same to you and everyone on the list.

Here in South Africa we are entering lockdown at midnight on Thursday.

As an example of how maintenance can be effected: Some council workers have
been working in our street for more than a week, replacing kerbs and fixing
the adjacent asphalt. Today (Thursday) they rushed to get everything done
before the lockdown and the result is poor quality work. Not the end of the
world, but a waste of time in my opinion. I won't be surprised if they're
back in a couple of months to fix their rush job.

I expect non critical maintenance will not occur, creating a backlog when
people return to work. All in all not a good time for infrastructure
maintenance in my opinion. But perhaps it will need less if it's not being
used as much.

At least I'll have some time to maintain my own infrastructure :-)

Cheers
Hanlie
