Dear All,
We’re pleased to announce the next session of the SPT maintenance and
philosophy of technology special interest group on Thursday 12th June
(18-1915 UTC +1). In this session, we’re excited to welcome Aaron
Perzanowski, author of *The Right to Repair: Reclaiming the Things we Own *(CUP
2022), who’ll be guiding us through the legal and policymaking contexts of
repair, examining both how the law has been used both as a tool to prevent
and enable repair by different actors. If you'd like a link to attend this

*Abstract: *The practice of repair is shaped in obvious and subtle ways by
law. A range of legal rules influence opportunities for repair—from license
terms and warranties/guarantees to intellectual property rights and
antitrust principles. For decades, the law has been used as a tool to
restrict repair and insulate planned obsolescence strategies. With the
ubiquity of software and favorable legal rules, manufacturers today enjoy
an unprecedented level of post-sale control over the products we buy. And
they sometimes use that power to prevent or discourage repair. In response,
activists have introduced targeted legal reforms intended to promote
independent repair. After many years, those efforts have started to see
success in jurisdictions around the world. This talk will offer a
high-level overview of the legal tools that have been used to restrict
repair and the efforts to reverse that trend.
