I'm seeing a different angle on this, though, one that's more in line with what I think the original poster is discussing: after one releases a creative work the effort isn't just in maintaining the level of creative skill -- performance maintenance -- it's in constructing and maintaining the infrastructure around the commercial/social life of the work. 

The promotions cycle of a novel is around 18 months -- generally six months before release author duties (versus writing duties) start ramping up, and then you're part of managing that system for the next year, from release day to the day when hardcovers generally come off shelves for good and are hopefully replaced with a more long-term, more easily returnable trade paperback/MMPB format. (There's a lot in here about the technicalities of when a bookstore can return a book to the distributor for account credit, which drives a lot of decisions in bookselling and thus promotions, but that's a whole other thing; just take as writ that the cycle is about 18 months).

During that time you have a job to do that's *definitely* a form of maintenance work: working with bookstores around a stock of signed copies, general public presence, whatever media is necessary, doing readings and festivals, correspondence coming off that release, mutual support work with other authors/a professional form of relationship maintenance, etc. It's more visible/active with musicians, I'm thinking, because there's touring and merch orders and acres of accounting to think about, but I absolutely see the point that this is an infrastructure, and a maintenance problem when you centre the work itself.

Or to put it shorter: all the Being An Author stuff is absolutely legible to me as a maintenance obligation to the product/act of actually writing. When art hits the public/does dissemination in any way it immediately requires infrastructure, and infrastructure means maintenance.

Again, this is a very cool thought, and I absolutely appreciate it! I'm going to run with this a little if you don't mind, and see where it gets me. 😊

Textbooks provide an illustration. The best of them are updated and supplemented throughout the period when they are in active use. But so are musical acts and sports performances. Practice starts to achieve something,  it then moves on to maintaining that performance.
