Dear All!

Well done on getting "over the hump" on "Herrick - Charms" on Thursday in particular this week!

This week's goals will be to keep up with our progress on that, "Dravidian Dithyramb" (men, you'll be starting this) and "O magnum mysterium," and to put some of the the musically simpler repertoire on its feet as well.

We'll also be getting back to Joshua (https://www.jwpepper.com/Joshua-Fit-the-Battle-of-Jericho/10031035.item#/submit) -

Clever rhythmic twists, syncopations and sophisticated harmonies make this a rewarding arrangement for better choirs. All the elements are in place: ram's horns blow, the children of Israel shout and the walls tumble on cue.

(Remember to listen to the TTBB recording, as they have the versions switched).

Re one of the easier pieces: here's the source music for our "Zombie" song - Baron Ochs' waltz from Richard Strauss' opera "Der Rosenkavalier" (1910). Please give it a listen. As this is actually a sizable scene, start 7:00 in for the best and clearest hearing of the specific source tune for "Zombie."

The following music from "Die Fledermaus" can give you more sense of the "lift" common to Viennese waltz music - i.e., in the orchestra at about :25-30 seconds in, and then again at about :54-58 (also in orchestra, under the singers). The chorus ensemble does a particularly big lift heading into their final big chorus of the scene, after some character dialogue - start at 3:33.
