Sorry, guys. Too much time on the computer has Bethany making a lot of typos.

The email to the alumni said 7, and I mistakenly put "8" on YOUR email. Apologies. It's 7. Hope to see some of you!

Subject: Choir in the Corona Lane! TOMORROW, 8pm, at a Zoom near you

Dear Choir!

I have been ruminating on a plan for the rest of the semester. That plan is outlined in the forwarded email below. Please give it a read-through.

The new and freshmen members among you will not know the names of those on the "To" list, but older students will probably recognize several folks there. The list includes both recent alumni and singers from some years back. All responded with enthusiasm to a post on the Choir Facebook page about getting together via Zoom to sing, and many will be joining in.

FYI, I have also been giving some thought to the fall (this is assuming we're back on campus!). I think that in light of all this, the fall concert theme will be "The Stevens Choir: Greatest Hits." Songs that members have loved more than once in the years I've been at Stevens. They will include, at the VERY least, "Jabberwocky" and "The Seal Lullaby" from this semester. They'll also include the other pieces on the initial singalong list below. "Witness," especially, is a favorite.

I miss our rehearsals more than I can say. I do realize some of you are not in a position to join in on what I hope will become regular sings during our regular choir times, and I won't be taking attendance per se! But I very much hope you'll be there. 🙂

The Zoom meeting invitation link is in bold red, below. I've left most of the other information in just in case someone needs it.

About Zoom: once you're in the meeting (I've made it possible to enter early), go to Audio Settings (lower left corner). Under "Microphone," UNCHECK the box "Automatically adjust microphone volume." Go to "Advanced" (lower right corner), and check the box "Show in-meeting option to 'Enable Original Sound' from microphone". For singing, we want original sound that doesn't get changed for the mic.

I hope you're all managing well (and are healthy!). It's a challenging time.

Looking forward to doing some singing. ❤️

Warmly,
Bethany

Subject: Choir in the Corona Lane!

Dear and Wonderful Alumni!

I can't tell you what it meant to me, holed up in my apartment in upstate Manhattan far away from my beloved and dispersed Stevens Choir, to see the response to this possibly-crazy idea of singing together on ZOOM.

It really is possibly crazy, and being Stevens alums, you will have a stronger understanding than I of issues of bandwidth and so forth. Those of us with limited bandwidth will probably need to switch to just-audio.

Here's my idea:

Purpose:
This is for fun and togetherness. We of course will do our best to honor the music, and I will Say Directory Things (!), but we won't sweat it overmuch. The bigger purpose here is to raise spirits and take joy in community in a time of necessary confinement and considerable stress.

Process:
We get together for short sessions - no more than an hour - a couple times per week during the regular Choir rehearsal times on Monday and Thursday evenings Eastern time (the current Stevens Choir members will be encouraged to attend). You come or not as it works for you (and no worries about late arrivals/early departures). If those times are no good for a number of you, I'd be happy to try to find an additional time or so per week. 🙂

We use Zoom, a teleconferencing platform now provided to all Stevens staff/faculty/students. I can send you an invitation link to recurring meetings on Mondays and Thursdays, and to whatever other sings we might want to set up. You don't have to have a Zoom account to join in. However, you should know that in this crisis, the Zoom folks are making the platform free up to a certain level. That means you could host your own online get-togethers. It's worth looking into.

I'll send more info on how to adjust settings in Zoom. It's pretty user-friendly.

First Sing Date:
Everyone will get an invitation for...let's call it 7-8pm Eastern time this Thursday 3/26 (subject to minor change; I'll know by early afteroon tomorrow).

Woot! And remember, no worries if you can't make it. Come to another one.

If you know another alum who you think would enjoy this, by all means share the link. Many folks aren't on the FB page.

Repertoire:
We focus, at least at first, on enjoying pieces the Choir has done more than once - the Stevens Choir "hits." Within those, we favor pieces that have helpful supports via YouTube. Given the purpose of these get-togethers, I'm not worried about us singing along with an existing recording. I've also discovered, via teaching my first voice lessons over Zoom just today, that lag is an issue. IF, however, we're all hearing and singing with the same video together, that problem should be considerably alleviated. I can share YouTube videos with you within Zoom so we're synchronous.

For at least a few pieces, this also means that our pianist, Stephanie, can sing for once. 😄

We won't just sing a piece once and never return, so don't fret about missing out on this/that piece if you can't make this Thursday or some other session. They'll be part of an ongoing repertoire for us.

I am ABSOLUTELY willing to take requests and do what I can to accommodate them. For now, here are links to a few starters!

In this order below, with parts links where available: Witness, The Seal Lullaby,* Northern Lights, Jabberwocky,* The Alma Mater* (no music at this point for that last one)

*In the current Choir's spring '20 repertoire

Not quite as energetic and very very up-tempo as we like it, for the most part, but a clean performance - good for a reminder! Maybe this serves as review, and then those of us that know "Witness" - which is most of us - have at it on our own. / BTW, the parts videos on YouTube are for the 8-part version. We've always sung the 4-part. The bass & soprano 1 are the same as ours, though.
