Dear Stevens Anime club,
Interesting opportunity to learn about Japanese culture.
Please join the Brooklyn Museum in kicking off the first of a series of
Japanese-related events this spring. In honor of the opening of two
shows of Japanese art, the Target First Saturday party on April 5,
2008, has a theme of “Japanimated! Arts and Cultures of Japan.” This
free event includes many exciting programs, including a Cosplay photo
contest, in which visitors come in costume as their favorite anime or
manga characters and have their photos by Museum staff. The visitor
with the best costume will be awarded an exhibition catalogue. Other
events include Japanese anime films, a poetry reading, guided tours,
and great dance party featuring Japan’s top hip-hop DJ, Muro. DJ Muro,
also known as King of Diggin, will be spinning his signature blend of
hip-hop, funk, and soul, keeping the dance party grooving until 11 pm.
For more information on DJ Muro, please visit
http://www.myspace.com/murotimate. These are just a few of the events
that will be taking place on April 5. For a more complete list, please

The Brooklyn Museum is also excited to invite you to attend “Love and
Pop: Contemporary Visual Cultures in Japan and Beyond” on Saturday,
April 12, 2008 from 12 – 5:30 p.m. The symposium explores the
connections between Japanese and American visual cultures and features
presentation by graduate students from a variety of disciplines. At
12noon Roland Kelts, author of Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture
Has Invaded the US will deliver the keynote address. At 1 p.m. Katy
Siegel, Associate Professor of Art History at Hunter College, CUNY and
a contributing editor to Artforum, will moderate the panel “Consuming
Desire: Superflat, Otaku, Kawaii and the Grotesque.” At 3:30 p.m. Aiko
Nakagawa, street artist and a founding member of the international
artist collective Faile, will moderate the panel, “Visual Release:
Gender, Art, Representation and Exchange.” The day will also feature
guided gallery tours. Love and Pop is free with Museum admission.
Thank you very much, and we hope to see you at these events! Please
spread the word to your friends and colleagues. These are just the
first of a series of events highlighting Japanese culture. If you would
like to receive more information about these events, a PDF flier with
