Why I Choose the Event:

Professor mentioned data center in the class, and the first topic for this
event is related to data center. I think this topic will give a more clear
thought on data storage. Other two topic is related to linux kernel and
dependency traps, which is not so related to system administration(I'm
totally confused about what they are doing).

Summary On the Topic:

This speaker first talked about old network topology:

He mentioned that the old network topology have several disadvantages:

1. Root node is not so maintainable(one goes down, all its subtree go down);

2. One leave node need to go through all its parent node to reach other
leaves;
3. Not so scalable.

Then he introduced Clos Topology:

With this topology, host can reach each other much more faster(just go
through two nodes).
And the system is much more scalable, we only need to add new leave to
spine then that's it. The whole system is more maintainable cause one spine
go down, it will only affect the connection speed, the speed will not go
down to zero.

He then mentioned some software and hardware like Quagga deamon,
FRRouting, Cumulus
Linux(Network OS), Poppet(Configuration Management) and etc.

What I learned:

1. A good system need to balance the trade off between hardware and
software.

2. Maintainability is a very important thing for a data center.

3. Food provided by Facebook is very nice.
