Happy New Year!

Please read Dr. Hazelwood's description of this exciting research
opportunity at Hackensack University Medical Center. It will be offered as
a 1 credit course, BME 499. Contact Dr. Hazelwood directly

at *vhazelwo@**stevens.edu* by *FRIDAY January 18th* including: *(1) your
major, (2) your** undergraduate level (sophomore, 3/5, junior, 4/5, senior)
(3) your GPA and (4) a BRIEF personal statement of interest*

** if you're interested. You will interact on the emergency room floor
with Emergency medical personnel and work with a performance improvement team
of clinicians.

Enjoy syllabus week,

SHPC Eboard

*DETAILS:*

Late last week, I met with a team of clinicians at HUMC who are responsible
for performance improvement. The team is in the ETD "Emergency Trauma
Department" area. The performance improvement efforts are geared toward
more expeditious patient care. Examples include: "moving an emergency
equipment supply cabinet closer to the patient care area", and "changing a
process for ordering x-rays so that a patient can get his x-rays in a
shorter time frame", etc.

The HUMC clinical team has begun to implement performance improvement ideas
and needs student assistance to either

(1) evaluate data

(2) collect data

And then process that data to measure and quantitatively demonstrate the
level of performance improvement.

*The** student** will** interact, on the emergency room floor, with
Emergency medical personnel.*

He/she will be guided by the clinical leader toward collecting, tabulating,
and analyzing data. We will require, at minimum, that the student has a
desire to learn about the clinical environment and has good analytical
skills, including the ability to manage and manipulate data and produce
graphical results by applying good statistical practices. The student must
also have access to transportation to and from Hackensack University
Medical Center (trains go near HUMC to and from Hoboken, but the schedule
is not frequent; carpooling is acceptable).

This is a great opportunity for a student in good standing at the junior or
senior level, or advanced sophomore level.

*This will be offered by Dr. Hazelwood as a 1 credit course,** **BME
499*, with
the expectation that the student spend about 3 hours per week at HUMC and,
in addition, perform the necessary desk/computer analysis work to support
their mission and experience.

A few slots are open. Candidates will be selected based upon their
qualifications and enthusiasm. Any interested student should please respond
to me, Dr. Hazelwood directly: *vhazelwo@**stevens.edu*<vhazelwo at stevens.edu>
* by Friday** January 18th*. In your response, please include: *(1) your
major, (2) your** undergraduate level (sophomore, 3/5, junior, 4/5, senior)
(3) your GPA and (4) a BRIEF personal statement of interest.*

I plan to hold a kick-off meeting with selected candidates during the week
of January 21st. TBA.

Thanks,

Dr. Hazelwood
