We really need to maintain our watersheds to ensure that rivers don't get
the best of us. In Western Zambia a ton of work goes into maintaining
canals (and the governance system for organizing canal maintenance). In
Bangladesh communities are trying to figure out how to protect the riverine
islands from erosion.

In Freetown (which has just experienced absolutely horrific flooding) and
in Nairobi, slum dwellers struggle to keep waterways clear of a never
ending stream of solid waste that, if not removed, can lead to flooding:

Harvey's another example of what happens when we fail to maintain
social/ecosystems. In Houston we've developed in floodable areas and paved
surfaces, increasing runoff.
