[Themaintainers] Maintainers email list migration

Hi, all.

Camille shared a few further thoughts, and I wanted to pass them onto the
list. This is in response to a question where I asked if her hesitation had
to do with Google. Camille wrote, "Yes, my concerns about surveillance
capitalism rise with every passing day. But in the spirit of better
understanding this change, let me ask you: what prompted this move? What
makes you characterize it as 'maturation'?"

And here is my response to her: Totally get that. We worry about Google
too. Couple things regarding "maturation": The first is that our current
set up is not stable, secure, or sustainable. Neither Andy nor I work at
Stevens anymore. Stevens could shut down the list at any moment or do God
knows what with our data, including the members list. The second bit just
has to do with centralizing and rationalizing our communications and data.
It's been VERY haphazard so far. For instance, at one point, Andy and I
didn't even have the members list backed up!! Educopia is helping us get
our act together along these lines.

Just wanted to have all such thoughts out there in the open - transparency
and . . . reasonableness is a real goal for us. If anyone else has thoughts
about where the list should go, please don't hesitate to share them either
with the list or with Andy and me individually. Andy and I and the team we
are working with certainly aren't locked into any specific option, and we
are happy to receive feedback - including about the ethics of platform
choices!
