I'm new to this mailing list and would like to offer a brief introduction. I'm an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Cal State Los Angeles. My disciplinary work is in earthquake engineering. I have broader interests in (a) resilient and sustainable infrastructure and communities and (b) philosophical inquiries on technology, uncertainty, and the good life. In February, I was invited to give a talk at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a series titled Engineering the Anthropocene. My talk, titled "Engineering the Via Negativa," made a case for reduced consumption and then explored ways that engineers can use their craft outside the paradigm of ever-increasing consumption. I touched on the need for an increased focus on the maintenance of both consumer products and infrastructure. During the visit, somebody recommended I look into the Maintainers, and here I am, after an understandable delay given world events. I'm excited to learn more about the group's members and activities, and I expect that there will be much for me to learn.

Best Regards,

Tona Rodriguez-Nikl, Ph.D., P.E.
