[Choir] Medieval Lift-Offs and Neos: Choral Topic #1, tonight at 7pm

Dear Singers!

Tonight I'm going to start at the very beginning ("a very good place to start..."). Not at "do re mi" per that song, but in the early underpinnings of what we think of as the Western choral tradition.

We'll hear some medieval music, look at some of the ways it points towards today's musical practices, and then visit some "neo-Medieval" choral music of recent times from the likes of Eric Whitacre, Arvo Pärt, and John Tavener.

Each week I'll pick a topic to explore that I hope will interest you and perhaps even serve you well beyond your Stevens years in future choral adventures. Expect some history, some of the truly great repertoire, the whys and whats of various musical developments, some IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) particularly useful for choral music...we'll listen to performances and look at scores and go on a joyride with great music from varying genres, including modern non-classical ones.
